Design Contributes to the Creation of Urban Atmosphere
Abstract
Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina. It is located on the southeastern coast of South America and on the south bank of the Río de la Plata. It is not only the political, economic and cultural center of the country but also an important transportation hub. It has long been known as the 'Paris of South America'.
The vigorous development of the design industry in Buenos Aires began in the early 21st century. In 2001, the Buenos Aires government launched a cultural rejuvenation plan to promote the transformation of the art and design industries and gradually positioned the city as the creative center of Latin America. In 2005, UNESCO awarded it the title of 'City of Design', marking its international recognition in the fields of industrial design, architectural innovation and modern art. In 2011, the first Buenos Aires Design Week was successfully held, attracting designers from all over the world and becoming an important design exchange platform in the Latin American region. In 2014, the city further focused on the renovation of public spaces and architectural innovation, enhancing its international reputation through large-scale public art projects. In 2016, local designers began to shine on the international stage, winning several design awards and promoting the globalization of the industry. By 2020, the economic contribution of the design industry had increased significantly, with a sharp rise in the number of enterprises, driving employment and cultural consumption and becoming a key engine for urban economic development.
Special projects are the practical carriers of design innovation. The Borges Cultural Center, located inside the historic Galerías Pacífico shopping mall, has been an intersection of modern art and public space since it opened in 1995, with its 10,000-square-meter multi-art space hosting exhibitions, tango performances and film screenings. The Recoleta Cultural Center, transformed from an 18th-century monastery, combines colonial style with modernist design and has become a model for the revitalization of historical heritage through the restoration by Clorindo Testa. The San Martín Cultural Center, a representative of modernist architecture, after its restoration in 2017, uses its multi-functional auditorium and art cinema to host high-end cultural activities such as ballet and drama. In addition, the International Book Fair in Spanish is held every April at the El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookstore (converted from a century-old opera house), attracting tourists from all over the world and demonstrating the city's emphasis on cultural consumption and the creative economy. These projects have not only strengthened the vitality of public spaces but also promoted Buenos Aires to continue to lead in the global design landscape through the integration of industrial design and modern art.
